WHAT WE BELIEVE

We embrace the historic Christian faith as it is set forth in the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. With Christians throughout the ages we affirm the following foundational truths:

  • We believe the Bible is the written Word of God, and that it is completely trustworthy in all that it teaches. It is our ultimate standard for what we believe and how we live.
  • We believe the one, true God exists eternally in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three persons are one in power and glory.
  • We believe God is the creator and sustainer of all that exists. Everything created by God is inherently good, and is to be enjoyed with thanksgiving for his glory and our benefit.
  • We believe men and women are created in the image of God to know and love him, and to wisely rule over and care for the rest of the creation on his behalf.
  • We believe men and women are presently estranged from God because of our refusal to acknowledge him as our creator and ruler, and our trying to live independently of him.
  • We believe God the Son became man in the person Jesus Christ, and that he lived, died on the cross, and rose again from the dead bodily, in order to redeem his people and to renew God’s creation.
  • We believe we are redeemed through faith in Jesus Christ alone, and not by anything we have done, though a transformed life is evidence of genuine faith in Jesus.
  • We believe the Holy Spirit gives Christians the wisdom and power they need to experience God’s presence, to live according to God’s will, and to grow more and more into the likeness of Jesus Christ.
  • We believe Christians are to come together in local communities, or churches, in order to help each other to live more faithfully and joyfully as followers of Jesus.
  • We believe Jesus will return to earth personally, visibly, and bodily in order to establish God’s perfect justice, and to complete God’s work of redemption and renewal.

HISTORIC SUMMARIES OF FAITH

These and other biblical truths are affirmed in various summaries of the Christian faith from the early church, such as the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed. As a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America we also stand in the rich tradition of the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century. We affirm the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms as a faithful expression of biblical teaching.
